It's rated PG-13 and stars Chris O'Donnell as Tom Sanders opposite Sissy Spacek as his mother. It's billed as "a pulse-pounding spectacle" with "gripping suspense. The film is centered on a mountain climbing expedition of retired party animal Tom Sanders. He had been a mountain climbing instructor, but had given up on his dreams, and had only begun to get them back when his old friend Jeff (Scott Glenn) calls him from Antarctica asking him to lead an expedition. Jeff says that during his last expedition, he experienced something that changed him forever. Jeff's brother Frank (Bill Paxton) and the rest of the team will be with Tom for this new journey.Tom and the group set out in hopes of finding a new mountain to climb with the goal of climbing it successfully in one month's time. Things go awry almost immediately when Frank and two others fall down a glacier and are assumed to be dead. This puts pressure on the rest of the team, especially Tom.When they finally make camp, Jeff confesses what happened to him during his last expedition. He explains that he had been climbing alone on the glacier when he came across a vine of sorts. He started climbing it, but soon realized it wasn't a vine at all - it was a link in the food chain. Jeff had found "the ladder" to become an apex predator, with instincts unlike anything he'd ever known before. The same thing that turned Jeff into something entirely new turned the three who fell down the glacier into something unknown as well. Tom decides to go on without Frank, which leaves Jeff alone up on the mountain. He witnesses several things happening, and realizes that he is truly the only one who can climb the mountain and bring Frank and his friends back.Unfortunately, his climber's instinct takes over and prompts him to abandon his former friend and leave before he makes it to safety. He does manage to find a way down, but is injured in the process. When Tom comes back he finds Jeff lying in a pool of blood with a vine wrapped around his leg (he'd tried to climb out, but had been caught). Tom knows he needs to use something from Jeff's bag if they want any chance of getting out alive... and Jeff knows it, too.The two have a heart-to-heart conversation, and Tom agrees to help Jeff climb the mountain that they have no intention of reaching. Far more than just an action-adventure movie, this film is also a commentary on corporate greed, the horror of pollution, and our own true nature as individuals. The film was written by William Broyles Jr., who gave us Mr. Brooks (novel), Almost Famous (screenplay), Turner & Hooch (screenplay) and many others. He also has written several other books including one entitled "The Shining Gospels" about various forms of spirituality blending with current day society.
